De materialen zijn koolstofstaal en koolstof-mangaanstaal. ASTM A178 pijpen en buizen worden meestal gebruikt in ketelbuizen, ketelpijpen, oververhitterpijpen en andere veilige toepassingen. Er zijn drie staalsoorten voor ASTM A178: Grade A is (low-carbon staal, grade C (medium-carbon staal), en grade D (koolstof-mangaan staal).
