ASTM A178 buizen worden meestal gebruikt in ketelbuizen, ketelpijpen, oververhitterpijpen en andere veiligheidstoepassingen. Er zijn drie staalsoorten voor ASTM A178: Grade A (staal met een laag koolstofgehalte), Grade C (staal met een gemiddeld koolstofgehalte) en Grade D (koolstof-mangaanstaal).
